I used colored pencil on toned paper for pet portraits, and I use reference photographs; my drawing time is much longer than a pet will sit still. Jump down to my photo tips if you want to know more about how I choose my references.

If you are interested in a full-body view and/or the addition of a background, I can give you a quote once I see what you have in mind.
After we decide on the particulars, a 50% deposit is appreciated before I start working, with the balance due on completion.
How I choose a reference photo:
Quick overview...
- I can see everthing from the tips of the ears down at least to shoulders and chest.
- Natural lighting if possible
- Sharp focus
All sample photographs were taken by me of past and current rescue cats at Whatcom Voice of the Animals, a no-kill shelter located in Bellingham, Washington.
1. Do I have enough information?
That means I can see everything I might want to include: from the tips of the ears to the shoulders and chest.

2. Lighting
Natural lighting is best, but if you have a picture you love that was taken with a flash, I can work with that too.

3. Focus
A sharply focused photo has more information for me, and the more detail I can see, the more detail I can put in the drawing, simple as that.
Frequently-Asked Questions:
1. How long does it take?
Please give me four to six weeks from the time I have your reference photos in hand.
2. I have two pets but no pictures of them together; what can you do?
If you have pictures of them individually, I can see about doing a composite of two or more photos.
