I used colored pencil on toned paper for pet portraits, and I use reference photographs; my drawing time is much longer than a pet will sit still. Jump down to my photo tips if you want to know more about how I choose my references.

How I choose a reference photo:

Quick overview...

  1. I can see everthing from the tips of the ears down at least to shoulders and chest.
  2. Natural lighting if possible
  3. Sharp focus

All sample photographs were taken by me of past and current rescue cats at Whatcom Voice of the Animals, a no-kill shelter located in Bellingham, Washington.

1. Do I have enough information?

That means I can see everything I might want to include: from the tips of the ears to the shoulders and chest.

Comparison: hidden and visible shoulders

2. Lighting

Natural lighting is best, but if you have a picture you love that was taken with a flash, I can work with that too.

Comparison: flash and no flash

3. Focus

A sharply focused photo has more information for me, and the more detail I can see, the more detail I can put in the drawing, simple as that.

Frequently-Asked Questions:

1. How long does it take?

Please give me four to six weeks from the time I have your reference photos in hand.

2. I have two pets but no pictures of them together; what can you do?

If you have pictures of them individually, I can see about doing a composite of two or more photos.
